Greeley Public Art - Tointon Gallery

The Tointon Gallery for the Visual Arts

The Tointon Gallery presents twelve changing shows each year to provide enjoyment, to help educate and to encourage dialogue with and about art. We strive to expose the community to a variety of media, artist styles, and skill levels. Our spacious 1,000 square foot art gallery features work by local and nationally acclaimed artists. We promote deeper understanding and open dialogue with informative exhibits and ‘meet the artists’ receptions.

Combine your gallery visit, located in Greeley’s Union Colony Civic Center, with a theatre performance for a full evening.

Real/Unreal - John Bonath

Look closely at REAL/UNREAL: Botanical Studies, a photographic display by John Bonath at the Tointon Gallery, October 23 – November 19, and you’ll be surprised to find out the new truth about photography according to John Bonath.

Look closely. Which flowers are real and which ones are fake? Are you sure? Look again. Often considered a faithful documentation of the natural world, photography has historically enabled artists to record reality. Despite this narrowly defined function, artists have consistently pushed the limits of technology’s capabilities. Photographers controlled the film’s exposure, manipulated the lighting or created fictional scenes in front of the camera-all with an eye to altering reality.

Look closely. Try to see how Bonath utilized new photographic tools and his imagination to challenge the viewer’s concept of truth and fiction. This series Real/UnReal: Botanical Studies focuses on specimens that have interesting colors, shapes and textures.

Look closely at the artist’s style, “Although my work is surreal in nature, it is more correctly placed in the movement of Magic Realism, which is less coincidental and not a fantasy set in the unreal. My style relies on the psychological assumptions that are the inherent nature of photography, the assumption that photographic reality is a representation depicting what was in front of the camera and therefore true in some way,” said Bonath in a recent interview.

Look closely…and enjoy John Bonath’s view of reality. He encourages audiences to touch the photos during the exhibit October 23 – November 19. The Gallery is located off the first floor lobby of the Union Colony Civic Center, with daily access from the Greeley Recreation Center. The Tointon Gallery is open Monday through Saturday from 9 am - 5 pm, Sunday’s 1-5 pm and during performances in the Monfort Concert Hall. Admission is free.  www.johnbonath.com
