Art in Public Places

The One Percent for Art program was initiated to add to the city’s overall quality of life. Greeley’s public places now boast over 25 memorable, thought-provoking, and enduring art projects that enrich the experience of visitors and heighten community pride.

Since the beginning, communities have established their identities and reinforced common principles and symbols in their public places. These projects entailed thoughtful, artistic structures which reflected community values, heroes, and themes. Greeley’s One Percent for Art program, approved in 1998, established a modest but deliberate mechanism to assure that significant public projects continue to invigorate the cultural identity of the community.

One percent of all the City’s capital improvements costs are dedicated to the expenditure of artistic design in the project composition or for artwork acquisition.

This program has cost each of Greeley’s citizen only 75 cents per year since 1998.

The Greeley Art Commission, a volunteer board appointed by City Council to oversee the public Art programs have been ‘fiscally responsible and do add the quality of life in Greeley’, as stated by City Council.

Essence of Tenchi By White Elk Glass Visions Ice Haus ~ west wall 14 blown glass platters ranging from 14” to 30” and 21 blown glass ribbons. The pieces represent the birth of the sacred energies emerging through the dance of fire and water. It is through this dance that relationships develop and evolve throughout our lives – the energies of life spring forth.	What My Community Means to Me By Vicki Reagan Island Grove Event Center April 2006 108 tiles are used to recreate a painting done by the artist’s father when he attended Greeley HS in 1940. Qualities of Weld County before WWII are portrayed in a style inspired by Thomas Hart Benton.

Winds of Change By Tom & Jean Latka 20th St. Median 59th Ave & 71st Ave. November 2005 The 12’ tall concrete and ceramic arch references historic ranch gates in the area and also provides a contrast to the urbanization of the area. The blue streaks down the sides refer to the importance of water.	Laying a Foundation By Mario Miguel Echevarria Greeley Historic Museum 714 8th Street July 2005 Three people influential, but lesser known, to Greeley’s history are depicted in ceramic relief tiles on the exterior of the Greeley museum.
Hands that Built Weld County By Vicki Reagan Island Grove Event Center April 2006 Various hands and signatures of people who have had a significant impact on the growth of Weld County.	Gold Map of the Southern World By Gerry Newcomb Ice Haus ~ balcony fascia The 4 kiln cast glass pieces invite people to explore art from many perspectives. They play with light to produce colors and shapes, and speak to the forms around us.
Luminaries By Barbara Grygutis FunPlex Leisure Center April 2006 Four glass towers that portray Colorado’s four seasons illuminate the night with interior lighting. They are approximately 30 ft high and 6 feet in diameter.	Community By Zink Metals 11th Ave & 25th St 2005 A steel structure 25’ long and 8’ tall which reflects the pattern of the stained concrete provides structural support for playful figures of varying size. The expressive movement of the piece helps to convey the energy and force that contribute to our community.
Para la Gente By Lauren Camp Rodarte Center 920 A Street May 2005 Four fiber panels depicting the youth and history of the Rodarte Center with photo, text and whimsical images.	Peak View Interpretative Panels Pat Alles and John Dietz Peak View Park 59th Avenue & 13th Street July 2002 With the help of local historian John Dietz, these four-color panels explain the history of the area visible from this advantage.
Written in Water Film Documentary By Alexandre Philippe October 2005 An artistic and education documentary about Greeley’s continued passionate pursuit and management of water resources.	Life on the Wild Slide By Greg Todd Greeley Ice Haus 800 8th St. September 2005 Bronze sculpture of four children skating and reminiscent of the pure joy of play.
Taking Off By Colette & Gary Pitcher Poudre River Trail ½ mile west of 71st Avenue June 2005 This pipe which crosses the ditch along the Poudre River Trail served as an unsafe and convenient short cut through the neighboring Poudre River Ranch subdivision. These decorative barriers were created for each end of the pipe and depict the natural environment. Their construction of steel that will naturally rust make them safe and low maintenance. Monfort Park Balls Monfort Park 47th Avenue & 24th Street August 2001	Oasis By Tim Upham Reservoir Road, West of 23rd Ave. 2000 A tribute to Greeley’s founding fathers and their insight into assuring an ample supply of water for Greeley. This art piece includes a fountain, fencing and photo images on Lexon.
The Benefits are Endless By Eleanor Yates Recreation Center 651 10th Avenue December 2002 This multi-media mural depicts in images and words the benefits of an active lifestyle.	Fire Station No. 7 By Jim Lynxwiler 10th Street & 66th Avenue November 2002 Serving as a beacon, this metal obelisk portrays fire fighting and life saving icons that light up at night.
Homestead By Vicki Ragan Island Grove Community Bldg. 14th Avenue & A Street January 2002 Includes over 200, 12" x 12" tiles with images depicting life in Weld County. These tiles are arranged in groups throughout the lobby area of the Community Building.	Reach for the Stars By Jim Lynxwiler Christa McAuliffe School 4th Street & 51st Avenue November 2001 Includes 6 metal, brightly colored panels of student artwork in collage form.
The Box Mural By Eleanor Yates Public Safety Building 919 7th Street July 2001 Inspired by a poem by Kendrew Lascelles, this mural encourages the youth of Greeley to resist war and work towards peace.
