Community Gardens
Gardening has many benefits and the Community Garden Advisory Committee has an opportunity fo
r residents to enjoy this activity and reap the benefits. In addition to the physical activity involved in digging, planting, watering and weeding, the taste and associated nutrients of fresh-picked produce will help contribute to a healthier lifestyle.
Greeley residents with the urge to garden but no space to satisfy their farming instincts are encouraged to apply to rent a garden plot this summer. For only $25 gardeners can rent a 15' x 15' plot in the Xeriscape Demonstration Gardens at the University of Northern Colorado on the corner of 17th Avenue and 20th Street in Greeley where 24 plots are available or at Plumb Farm Learning Center, 955 39th Avenue where 7 plots approximately 15’ x 20’ are available. Plots will be assigned on a first come-first served basis after the applications are reviewed and approved.
Gardeners must supply their own seeds, plants, gardening supplies and tools. The rental fee includes the cost of water for irrigation and general site management. Gardeners selected for the UNC site will be required to also provide a $25 deposit for a water key which will be refunded when the key is returned at the end of the season. Gardeners selected for the Plumb Farm site will be required to attend a pre-season meeting at the site to learn about site specific matters related to access, water management and plot maintenance requirements.
The opportunity to rent a garden plot is one of the projects coordinated by the Community Garden Advisory Committee as part of Project GROW (Gardeners Reaping Opportunities for Wellness) through the Natural Resource office at the City of Greeley . This program is an integrated effort of the City of Greeley, Steps to a Healthier Weld County , University of Northern Colorado, Envision, Colorado State University Cooperative Extension and interested community members.
The Community Gardens of Weld County will also be offering classes throughout the year in topics that you can use at your home garden, such as installing low water use drip irrigation system, organic pest control, preserving your excess crops and more.
If you are interested in renting a garden plot you need to submit a Community Garden User Application. Completed applications must be received by April 15th. Successful applicants will be notified by May 1st . The $25 non-refundable fee must be paid and work on the plot must be started by May 15th.
